I was recently invited to speak to two of Cedar Ridge High School’s graphic design classes about my experiences as a designer so far. During my visit I was surprised to see how advanced the classes are compared to the design education I received in high school. Just the fact that I was visiting them already hinted at this, since my highschool never had a designer of any kind talk to the students.

Last year I did a project that included going around my hometown of Belton, Texas, taking pictures of the local businesses and organizations’ signs. The purpose of the project was to get a general idea of the graphic design in Belton specifically, so the signs and logos of large corporate chains, such as McDonald’s and Taco Bell, weren’t included.

In a rushed American culture that values individual success so highly, it’s easy to get caught up in our own world and our own problems. Rarely do we see neighbors going out of their way for each other, or a car ride without someone tailgating us at some point (or us tailgating someone else). Throughout my life I’ve succumbed to the selfish mindset. But, being a graphic designer, I can’t put myself first.
